The new TLO 37: aerodynamic and very stiff

Our main goal was to develop a rim with a maximum of 300 g in order to be able to offer a mountain wheelset that weighs 900 g. It was clear from the start that we had to reduce the rim height. In order to keep the aerodynamics at a high level, this could only be a few millimeters. In our computer simulations it quickly became clear that with a 37 mm rim height and a bulbous shape we could achieve our goal and still achieve excellent aerodynamics. Safety first: As with our frame, we do not go to the last gram when it comes to these components that have a decisive influence on driving behavior, but rather keep the rigidity at a high level. Since we have prepregs woven in a circle, we can lay down very thin layers by hand very precisely, as with the handlebars, so that the fibers are well aligned with the center of the hub and can optimally distribute the forces that occur.

U-Shape

For the best performance at high speeds – The aerodynamic U-shape has been successively optimised to achieve the best aerodynamic properties. In order not to deform the shape under spoke tension, more material with different fibre orientations has to be accumulated – nevertheless, a sensationall low weight could be achieved while maintaining stability. Aerodynamics were even more important to us for this product than minimising weight.

Inner width

22,3 mm – The best aerodynamic properties are achieved with a tire width of 28 mm.

Hubs of our trust

The new SPD3+ hubs from Extralite also allow us to install the lightest hubs for this wheelset with carbon spokes.

Everything carbon: including the spokes

In order to still be able to achieve our weight specifications, only carbon spokes were considered from the start. Spokes only absorb tensile forces, which is why carbon, with its tensile strength up to four times that of steel, is of course perfect here and enables a higher preload. The biggest challenge is the application of force. We achieve this with perfectly connected titanium end pieces. We continue to stick with 24 spokes in order to be able to absorb the braking forces optimally and to keep the lateral stiffness of the wheels incredibly high, despite the low weight. The fatigue strength of carbon is also significantly higher than that of steel, which of course makes the spokes much more durable given the constant loading and unloading during each wheel revolution. Furthermore, the damping properties of the carbon fibers also lead to noticeably softer rolling of the wheels.

Which freewheel system do I need?

Before you make the purchase, you should be clear about which gears you have installed on your bike. This determines which freehub body you should order.

Shimano – If you have installed a Shimano group set, please select Shimano (HG-11) as the freehub body. Even with the new 12-speed gears, the cassette can still be installed on the conventional HG-11 freehub body without any problems.

SRAM – If your bike has a SRAM group with an 11-speed cassette, you should choose the Shimano HG-11 freewheel body to be able to install your cassette. The newer 12-speed AXS gears from SRAM require the XDR freehub body for assembly, in which the cassette is screwed onto the body in one piece.

Campagnolo – If you have installed a Campagnolo 12-speed gears, we ask you to select the “Campagnolo” freehub body when ordering.

Manageable and agil

With their manageable and agile character, the wheels are born for the mountains and for the undulating marathon terrain. Thanks to their high lateral stiffness, every watt reaches the road directly. The TLO37 wheels can be steered very precisely and give a calm feeling on fast downhill rides. At high speeds, the low susceptibility to wind also conveys a high feeling of safety. Nevertheless, we now have the lightest TLR aero series wheels in the world, staying true to our motto TLO = The Lightest One.”
